Stages of children speech development

There are 4 stages in children speech development. These include:

  • preparatory – from birth to 1 year;
  • pre-school – from 1 to 3 years;
  • preschool – from 3 to 7 years;
  • school – from 7 to 17 years.

Each stage of speech development has its own characteristics.

Common problems

Many children face language development problems. They are divided into 3 main groups:

  • phonetic-phonemic – defects in pronunciation of individual sounds, intonation, voice formation, pronunciation;
  • general underdevelopment of speech – aphasia, alalia;
  • violations of the use of means of communication – stuttering.

The general underdevelopment of speech includes alalia and aphasia. A child with severe speech disorders has no sound pronunciation at all. This disorder is associated with serious congenital organic lesions of the brain. Because of this, speech is not initially formed at the age at which it should already be. Aphasia is complete or partial loss of already formed speech. It could develop because of traumatic brain injury, infections that affect central nervous system.

Correction methods

There are different ways to correct speech disorders in children. These include:

  • communication with loved ones;
  • study of the surrounding world;
  • development of auditory perception.

In speech development of children, regularity and consistency are important. When practicing with a child at home, you should start with simple exercises. In severe cases, you should contact a speech therapist.
